The Vibe Check: The Wedding Photographer Checklist Nobody Talks About

A little while ago, I was sat with one of my closest friends while she was planning her wedding.

Like every newly engaged couple, she'd gone down the rabbit hole of Instagram, Pinterest and Google. We were scrolling through photographer after photographer, admiring the most beautiful galleries. Light, airy images. Gorgeous editing. Dreamy couples. Every portfolio looked better than the last.

"I love these," she said.

And honestly... so did I.

Their work was stunning.

But after a while I stopped scrolling and asked her one question.

"Okay... but can you imagine them with our friends?"

She looked at me, laughed, and immediately knew what I meant.

Because here's the thing.

Our friendship group isn't exactly... the shy retiring kind.

We're loud. We take the mick out of each other constantly. Someone is always organising something that we’re going to be talking about for years. There'll be someone upto some sort of shenannigans before the starter is even served. There will be hugs, chaos, questionable dance moves and an energy that can only really be described as wonderfully feral.

And I said to her,

"As much as I love these photos, can you imagine this photographer when our lot arrives? Could they handle them? Would they lean into it? Would they capture the beautiful portraits... but also the absolute chaos that makes you and our friends who they are?"

That's when it clicked.

Because choosing a wedding photographer isn't just about loving the photos.

It's about loving the person who's going to spend almost your entire wedding day with you.

The Vibe Check

I genuinely think this is one of the biggest things couples forget when they're choosing a photographer.

We all compare editing styles, packages, prices and galleries. Those things absolutely matter.

But somewhere along the way, we forget to ask ourselves...

"What's this person actually going to be like on our wedding day?"

Your photographer isn't someone who appears for an hour and disappears.

They're there while you're getting ready with your closest people.

They're with you during those nervous moments before the ceremony.

They're organising family photos.

They're chatting to your grandparents.

They're hyping you up before couple portraits.

They're weaving in and out of your friendship groups.

They're often one of the people you spend the most time with on your wedding day.

That's a big deal.

Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe

I honestly believe the energy your photographer brings shapes the energy of your photographs.

If they make you feel comfortable, you'll relax.

If they make you laugh, you'll laugh for real.

If they embrace your friends instead of trying to tame them, those genuine moments unfold naturally.

The best wedding photos don't happen because someone perfectly positioned your hand.

They happen because you forgot there was a camera there.

Every Couple Is Different

Not every wedding is loud.

Some are beautifully calm.

Some are intimate.

Some are elegant.

Some are one big party from start to finish.

A great photographer doesn't force every wedding into the same mould—they recognise who you are and photograph your day in a way that feels true to you.

And that's why the vibe check matters.

Before You Book...

Of course you should fall in love with someone's portfolio.

But don't stop there.

Read their captions.

Meet them on a video call.

Watch how they interact online.

Ask yourself how they make you feel.

Can you imagine spending ten hours with them?

Can your family?

Can your friends?

Can they blend in when they need to, step up when they need to lead, and laugh with the people you love most?

Because years from now, you won't just remember your photos.

You'll remember how your wedding day felt.

And the people who shared it with you helped create that feeling.

Your photographer is one of them.

So before you tick them off the checklist, don't forget the one thing nobody talks about enough...

Do the vibe check.
